Merzouga, Morocco
A Photographer’s Dream in the Sahara
Discover the Magic of Merzouga
Merzouga is a small desert village in southeastern Morocco, right on the edge of the vast Erg Chebbi dunes. This is the gateway to the Sahara Desert, where towering golden dunes, endless horizons, and a nomadic way of life create a unique and mesmerizing atmosphere.
I captured Merzouga’s raw beauty during one of my many journeys through Morocco. As a social anthropological photographer, I seek to document places and cultures that might vanish in the coming decades. Merzouga is one of those places—rich in tradition but increasingly influenced by modern life.
Why Visit Merzouga?
Merzouga is not just a tourist attraction; it’s a living desert experience. Here’s what makes this destination so special:
1. The Iconic Erg Chebbi Dunes
The Erg Chebbi dunes are some of the highest in Morocco, reaching up to 150 meters. The play of light and shadow at sunrise and sunset creates breathtaking photography opportunities.
2. Traditional Berber Culture
The local Amazigh (Berber) people have lived here for centuries, maintaining their unique traditions, music, and way of life. A visit to a nomadic Berber family offers a glimpse into their world.
3. Camel Trekking into the Desert
For the ultimate Sahara adventure, take a camel trek into the dunes. Spend a night in a desert camp, sleep under the stars, and wake up to the most surreal sunrise.
4. The Unique Wildlife of the Sahara
Despite the harsh conditions, Merzouga’s desert is home to fascinating wildlife, including fennec foxes, desert hedgehogs, and rare bird species. Photographers will love capturing these elusive creatures in their natural habitat.
5. The Seasonal Lake of Merzouga
Yes, there’s water in the desert! The Merzouga Lake (Dayet Srji) appears seasonally and attracts flamingos and other migratory birds—a rare and spectacular sight in the middle of the dunes.
